How to Apply for a RealID
A REAL ID (or a valid U.S. passport) is required for anyone age 18+ to board domestic flights or enter certain secure federal facilities.

A REAL ID is an enhanced driver’s license or state ID that meets federal security standards. Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID (or passport) to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.
1. Confirm Eligibility and Requirements
Visit your state’s DMV or licensing agency website and look for the “REAL ID” section. Requirements vary slightly by state, so always follow your state’s official list.
2. Gather Your Documents
Most states will require:
Proof of identity and lawful status
(U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, or other accepted document)Social Security number
(Social Security card, W-2, or paystub with full SSN)Two proofs of residency
(utility bill, bank statement, lease, mortgage, or similar with your name and address)
Name-change documents (marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order) may be required if your current name doesn’t match your identity document.
3. Complete Any Required Application
Some states let you start the application online; others provide a printable form. Fill it out ahead of time if possible to save time at the office.
4. Visit a DMV / Licensing Office in Person
REAL IDs must be issued in person.
Bring all original documents (or certified copies) and your completed application. Be prepared to have a new photo taken.
5. Pay the Required Fee
Fees vary by state and may be the same as, or slightly more than, a standard license/ID renewal. The DMV will let you know the total cost when you apply.
6. Receive Your REAL ID
Some states issue the card on the spot; others mail it to you within a few weeks. You’ll recognize it by the star (or similar symbol) in the upper portion of the card, indicating it is REAL ID–compliant.
