How to Make It through Airport Security with Ease

Few travel experiences strike fear in the hearts of even the most seasoned flyers quite like the TSA security line. Shoes off, laptops out, liquids in a baggie â it can feel like a test no one studied for. But with the right prep (and maybe a little patience), you can glide through security instead of fumbling with your belt buckle while everyone behind you sighs dramatically.
Hereâs how to make the process smoother:
Â
Know the Rules Before You Go
Visit TSA.gov before packing. The site outlines what you can and cannot bring, the details of the 3-1-1 liquid rule, and other guidelines. Knowing the rules upfront prevents embarrassing bag searches (and saves you from awkwardly explaining why you thought a full-sized bottle of shampoo was fine).
Â
Book Early
Surprisingly, frequent fliers note that travelers who book last-minute sometimes face extra scrutiny. While TSA wonât say youâre âflagged,â it doesnât hurt to plan ahead. At the very least, booking early gets you better seat choices and lower fares â so itâs a win-win.
Â
Bring Proper ID
For adults: a government-issued photo ID like a driverâs license or passport is required. Kids under 18 traveling domestically typically donât need their own ID â but airlines may ask for proof of age if theyâre flying as a lap child.
Â
Double-Check Your Bags
Before you leave home, give your carry-on one last sweep. Anything sharp, oversized, or âsuspicious-lookingâ will slow you down. If youâre not sure itâs allowed, either pack it in checked luggage or leave it behind. (Yes, even that snow globe Aunt Linda gave you.)
Â
Dress for Success (and Speed)
Wear shoes that slip off easily, since everyone over age 12 has to remove them. Belts, jackets, and bulky sweaters also need to come off â so dress in layers that are easy to remove and put back on. The goal: less striptease, more breeze-through.
Â
Master the 3-1-1 Rule
All liquids, gels, and aerosols must be:
3.4 ounces or smaller per container
In 1 clear quart-sized bag
1 bag per traveler
Travel hack: pre-pack your liquids bag and keep it at the top of your carry-on for quick access.
Â
Prepping Kids for Security
If youâre traveling with little ones, talk them through what to expect: shoes off, jackets off, walking through the scanner alone. Arrive early so they can watch others do it first â sometimes seeing it happen is the best reassurance.
Â
